Joey Scouts - The first jump into scouting!

Joey Scouts is the first Section of Scouts, for boys and girls aged 5 - 8. The section focuses on having fun. developing friendships and gently introducing members to the challenges and adventurers found in Scouting. A young person can join the Joey Section at any time provided they are attending school fulltime.
Our trained Joey Scout Leaders guide a Joey Mob of no more than 20 boys and girls, as they learn to share and care for each other in a social environment. It’s more than school as it extends each child’s understanding of the world around them. Joey Scouts learn how to recognise native birds and animals and develop an understanding of the impact of our modern world on the environment.  At this age children need experiences which help them learn to work and play in groups, mix with adults outside home and school environments, and develop their physical, intellectual, social and spiritual abilities through active experiences.

About Our Joey Mob

At Dural our Joey Mob meets Thursdays from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. There is a simple standard opening and closing ceremony where the Joeys salute the flag and remember their promise, law and theme.
Basic Information
A Joey unit is commonly referred to as a Joey Mob and typically made up to roughly 20 boys and girls aged between 5 and 8 years of age. The mob is looked after by a leader who has undertaken special training and is usually a parent of one of the joeys. The leader is assisted by one or more additional leaders to help them instruct and assist with supervising the scouts. The Safety of our Joey Scouts is very important which is why we always have at least 2 leaders on hand during all activities they undertake
Why Join Joeys?
In this section scout members are encouraged to express themselves creatively. Through games, stories and craft activities. By building things like monsters or spaceships from scrap items, to growing plants from seedlings or even singing songs together around a campfire all joeys develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around them.

Some of the things you can expect your child to learn about during their time in this section include:
  1. Socialising with other children
  2. Basic bushcraft e.g. recognising native flora and fauna
  3. Reacting to emergencies
  4. How to take responsbility for their actions
  5. Basic adventure-based activities

The Joey Scout Uniform is easy care and affordable. It consists of the dark blue polo shirt with the Joey section colour (tan) across the sleeve, yoke and collar. Below the waist, joeys wear navy blue shorts, trousers or skirt.

Dural Joeys also wear our royal blue, red and white Dural Scouts scarf, and a woggle.

Our Joey Leaders

Leaders in this section are not referred to as Mr. or Mrs, but are given names from some of the friends in the Australian Bush or Aboriginal names. Some examples are Brolga, Bilby, Magpie or in our case Galah, Dropbear and Platypus!
