Become a leader at Dural Scouts!
There are many roles for adults at Dural Scouts. You may become a Leader of a Joey Mob, Cub Scout Pack, Scout Troop or Venturer Scout Unit, which involves varying degrees of program planning and weekly meetings.
You may have a certain interest in adventurous activities such as abseiling or water activities and become an Activity Leader. As you progress through Scouting, you can also become involved in training and leading adults. Leaders of Joey Scout Mobs, Cub Scout Packs, Scout Troops and Venturer Scout Units need to allocate one night a week for the group meeting during school term time. You will also need to attend group activities (e.g. hikes or camping trips) on a few weekends a year. Also attendance at a monthly meeting of Leaders is required. |
Leaders are given training and support by other Leaders from Scouts Australia, and are given resources of program ideas. There is training in all aspects of youth leadership, program planning, safety and other requirements.
Benefits of Becoming a Scout Leader:
The benefits of becoming a volunteer Leader are limitless. Scouting is dynamic and fun. As a Leader you will help to provide self development to young people through a variety of challenging, adventurous, achievement-oriented, teamwork and leadership-based experiences. Scouting provides adults with an opportunity to lead and gain satisfaction working with young people and other adults; to make a direct positive impact on your local community and on the lives of young people. Benefits of becoming a Leader include:

As a leader, you get to spend time and join in activities with your children that probably wouldn’t occur outside of Scouts.
Children of leaders get more out of scouts and have the best chance of achieving the top awards. That is due to leaders being more aware of what is required and encouraging their children to complete tasks during the week. Most children only get a weekly reminder at the hall.

What Training Do I Have to Do?
As a Leader, you must undertake Basic and Advanced training in working with young people, including learning the basics of Scouting, leadership, safety and program planning. You are also required to make a commitment to the completion of Advanced Training within a three-year period. This training is a Scouting standard all over the world, and is known as the Wood Badge.
Training involves a combination of eLearning, practical experience and residential weekends.
Accredited Opportunities
As a Registered Training Organisation, Scouts Australia also offers the opportunity for Leaders to complete Nationally Recognised Training in both Business and Outdoor Recreation.
What is the Cost?
There is no cost involved for volunteer leaders in meeting their weekly Scouting commitment. Your Group covers training expenses. However, for major events such as Jamborees you may be asked to contribute in whole or in part to these costs.
You will have to purchase your own uniform, and depending on the activities of your Group, you may need to purchase (or borrow) some of your own equipment from time to time.
Do I need a Uniform?
Yes, The Leader Uniform consists of the dark blue shirt, and can be purchased from the Scout Shop. We'll supply you with a 1st Dural royal blue, red and white scarf. Below the waist, (grey/light coloured/navy blue) shorts, trousers or skirt.

I don't have time to be a leader full-time. What else can I do?
If you can't spare the time to lead a Group regularly, there are still opportunities to help Scouts. Scouts Australia has numerous activity centres and need people to help when they can. For example, if you are interested in abseiling, you can volunteer to help out when Groups go abseiling.
Alternatively, contact your local group, who are always happy for people to help when they can. You could also join our Group's Committee to help with the running and fundraising for the Group.
However, whenever you are involved in the position of working with young people you will be required to undergo a Police Clearance and possess a valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) number.
